The 1940's
Not just fashion, but necessity continued the use of gold during the 1940’s. The
use of platinum – a component in the manufacture of explosives – was restricted
during the war years – and precious gems were scarce because of transport difficulties.
The metal predominated. Large areas of polished gold coaxed into hard edged forms
with a precision that gave the impression of the work of the engineer. Hollywood
stars became the new royalty.
Their jewellers – Paul Flato and Trabert and Hoeffer fulfilled their need for “fantasy”
jewels. Large cabochon cut gems became fashionable. Big, Bold and Dramatic was the
look of the 1940’s.
