The Designers
It would be invidious to attempt to pick out “the best” or “the greatest” designer
of the 20’s Century. Those that we have mentioned were all great within the context
of their time.
During “our” period, the prestige firms - Cartier, Van Cleef, Lacloche, Mauboussin
- produced consistently high quality jewels but were not inclined to publicize their
designers - presumably preferring to promote the firm rather than an individual.
The Modernists – George and Jean Fouquet, Sandoz, Templier, Brandt conceived original
and brilliant designs totally in tune with the “Machine Age”.
In the 1930’s Suzanne Belperron and René Boivin ignored the Art Deco aesthetic and
Modernism almost entirely, Paul Flato and Trabert and Hoeffer were producing fantasy
jewels in Hollywood. Jean Shlumberger and Fulco de Verdura moved from Paris to New
York and carved their own original path.
Sterlé produced a totally new look for the 1950’s, Andrew Grima was winning awards
and recognition during the ‘60’s and Tiffany in New York were promoting new young
designers.
The following few pages contain a potted biography of some we admire and constantly
try to stock.
